Tree Campus USA logoThanks to cooperative efforts between the Physical Plant's Landscaping Services and our friends in the Department of Biology, Appstate has been nationally recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation as a "Tree Campus USA."  (PDF link explains the criteria forHammock becoming a "Tree Campus".)

"We've been working on this since 2009," said Eddie Hyle, one of Appstate's arborists.

One of the greatest demands of the designation is completing a tree inventory.  Then grad student, now Physical Plant employee, Jason tree campus groupHarkey spearheaded the effort which required visiting and GPS marking all the managed trees on campus.  Layers and layers of data were collected on each specimen, including species, girth, health, etc., and that information was fed into a GIS map of campus.

Appstate meticulously tracks the health of trees on campus, judiciously pruning, feeding and even "fluffing" the compacted soil at the roots of trees with a high pressure blower called an "air spade."

Trees are vital to our enjoyment of Appstate and to celebrate this we will be planting 64 trees in back of Broyhill Music Center on October 21st and 22nd, 2014.  Please join us!  We'll provide the tools and know-how, all you need to do is wear close-toed shoes and bring some gloves if you have them.  UPDATE:  THIS EVENT HAS PASSED AND WAS A GREAT SUCCESS.  Photos of event here.
