Sustainability Policy

In 2009, the University of North Carolina created a system wide Sustainability Policy. Appalachian State University leads in creating a world where environmental, societal, and economic qualities exist in balance to meet the resource needs of today and of future generations. Our community of students, faculty and staff continually advance our understanding, capabilities and practices in this vital journey. As an institution of higher learning, we lead and educate by example, inspiring new generations prepared to share this knowledge, ingenuity and passion.

Appalachian is a leader in sustainability and leads by example. In 2008, Appalachian State University joined over 500 colleges and universities when Chancellor Kenneth Peacock signed the American College and Universities Presidents' Climate Commitment (ACUPCC). The ACUPCC encourages higher education institutions to take a leadership role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

In 2009, the Office of Sustainability was created in order to guide and support the university toward its sustainability commitment. Click here to learn more about Appalachian State University commitment to sustainability.
